An airport is a logistical environment, and security systems need to allow airport security staff to respond to priorities immediately with detailed, real time visual and factual information.

An airport can be the size of a small city - encompassing check-in areas, shopping mall, terminals, lounges, runways, car parks, with millions of passengers, not to mention cargo, passing through every year. While open 24 hours, and being a ‘public’ place, security is now more critical than ever. Areas of very high security are paramount, for the safety of not only travellers and airport staff, but also in the aim of protecting an entry point to potential threats.

Access control is used to control flow of passengers and restrict access to unauthorised areas. Post 9-11, Aviation laws have tightened in requiring airports to develop enhanced access control, including strengthening access points to secure areas - air traffic control operations, maintenance, crew lounges, baggage handling, concessions, and catering delivery. With regards to terrorism and sabotage, certain areas must be able to be locked down. Secure areas can be monitored, with the status being reported back to system. A quick response to changing situations, i.e. terrorist alert - lock down certain areas, fire alert - unlock certain access, is critical. Full traceability of events, including ability to search digital video data associated with events is another typical requirement.
